New for Spring 2016, Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Colors ($6) are a range of matte liquid lipsticks that promise bold long-lasting color with a hydrating comfortable wear. They are available in 7 shades, from neutrals to mid-tone pinks, coral and vibrant reds.
First off, the packaging of Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Colors is adorable! These lippies come in a lovely little metal tin decorated with a watercolor floral design and there’s also a mirror inside the lid of each tin when it’s flipped open. That’s pretty neat for a $6 lipstick! The lip color itself is an oval shaped see-through tube with a silver cap and a long, flat sponge applicator.
Now let’s talk about the formula. As far as aesthetics, the Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Color applies smoothly and evenly, with full color coverage in a single coat. True to its name, the formula has a lightweight mousse-like texture with a smooth, velvety cream to matte finish that’s not patchy at all. When first applied, the colors do have a bit of a shine but then dry down to a true matte finish pretty quickly. I am not too fond of the sweet caramel-ish scent but thankfully it dissipates soon after application.
I tried two of the seven shades and both of them are incredibly pigmented. It doesn’t take much at all to get a lot of color, and the color really sticks around, even through lunch and 2-3 cups of tea! However, the long-wearing matte formula doesn’t get along very well with my naturally dry lips. Although not harshly dry on the lips, the formula is not moisturizing enough (at least for me) and starts to feel slightly tacky after the first two hours of wear. I need something that provides the dry look of a matte without the uncomfortable dryness. So, does this product really live up to my expectations in terms of comfort? Not completely, but that’s not a deal breaker either! A quick swipe of lip balm does help!
The two colors I tried are Cherry Blossom (a deep berry pink) and Hibiscus (a bright coral). I love Cherry Blossom…it’s perfect for a night out or whenever you are in the mood for a pop of color on your lips! As for Hibiscus, I liked the color in the tube but didn’t find it very flattering on me when applied…that’s just my personal thing though and it might look great on you!
Overall, Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Color ($6) is a really nice product for its performance, tenacious wear, and excellent color payoff…and the price is right! Not to mention, the pacakging is so cute! This is a true matte liquid lipstick that delivers on its long-lasting claims (although not without a bit of dryness) so you can really count on it for hours of wear. If you are mad about mattes, this one is a must-try!
The Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Colors are available only at Walmart and Walmart.com
