There are many hair care problems that frustrate women and men alike, and leave them with frizzy, dry looking hair. One of the most difficult and common ones is having split ends. Split ends is what we call trichoptilosis, or splitting of the shaft of the hair. Common reasons for split ends are heat damage from your styling tools, chemical treatments, using poor tools that tear or rip hair or detangling improperly. Thankfully, there are ways to avoid this problem as well as ways to solve it.
To prevent split ends, there are a few options. Make sure you use a deep conditioner once a week and a proper hair conditioner regularly. Don’t over wash your hair (at least no more than once a day) as this could cause dry brittle hair. When combing wet hair, make sure to use a wide toothed comb and go slowly, so as not to rip or tear at your hair. Try not to over-use heat styling tools. If you are regularly using a hair straightener, hot rollers or a curling iron, make sure to use heat protecting products so that your hair does not get damaged from the heat. Getting regular trims is also a great preventative measure, as you will keep your ends clean and precise and not give split ends a chance to travel up your hair shaft.
The best way to avoid split ends is prevention. Once the ends of your hair are split, however, it is almost impossible to fix them any way except for by cutting the hair. You can disguise your split ends by choosing a different style (wearing your hair up) or choose a product (like this one) that will temporarily stick the torn ends together so that they give a smooth appearance. If those options don’t work for you, or you are looking for a longer term solution, then getting a clean trim with a good pair of professional hair shears is the best way to go. Ask your stylist to cut a bit more off than the split ends so as not to leave any torn or split hair that will continue to split and look frizzy.
Keeping your hair regularly trimmed and conditioned, as well as being careful while using heat styling products is the best way to get rid of split ends and the frizzy, unkempt look that accompanies them. Prevention is much easier than treatment, which is temporary at best. Follow these tips to have smooth, healthy looking hair and avoid split ends for good!
