I vividly remember being unfairly fired from my first job at a department store when I was just 16. I had gotten caught in a rainstorm that morning and showed up to work looking like a drowned rat, only to be called into the supervisor’s office and told I was being let go.
The reason I remember it so vividly is because I was such a wet, sloppy mess. If I had been looking my best, I would have marched out of there with my head held high, perhaps even told off my supervisor or at least valiantly argued my case. Instead, I slunk away, totally mortified and humiliated.
We can’t help it, we’re human. How we look defines us to some degree, whether we like it or not. It doesn’t help that we’re constantly lambasted by airbrushed photos of models in magazines and on billboards, television commercials and more. We know we’re beautiful on the inside, but just once we’d like to look a little better on the outside.
Advances in Cosmetic Surgery
Once considered the domain of aging movie stars and wealthy society matrons, cosmetic surgery has come into its own in the past few decades, and can help us to change that one thing about ourselves that we just can’t live with. We all seem to have that one area of our body that we obsess over; my nose is too big, breasts are too small, if I could just lose that jellyroll. It’s like having a pimple on our forehead; others may not notice it, but to us, it’s a beacon brighter Rudolph’s shining proboscis!
With modern advancements in cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, a world of options is opening up that were not available to our parents. We don’t have to look older than we feel; we don’t have to put up with strange growths that show up on our faces. We don’t have to go bald just because our fathers did or develop a turkey neck like our mothers did. We can age gracefully and graciously, and keep people guessing how many birthdays we’ve had.
Look Good to Feel Good
It’s been scientifically validated time and again: When you look good, you feel good. Conversely, when you look bad, you feel bad, and perception is everything. Even though it may be barely noticeable to someone else, when we have something we don’t like about ourselves, it’s distracting and we wonder if everyone else is staring.
If a cosmetic enhancement like a facelift or eyelid surgery corrects that deficiency, gives us what we’ve always wanted, we can’t help but get a tremendous boost to our confidence and self-esteem. Think of the woman who gets her varicose veins removed and wears a short skirt for the first time in decades, the girl with dreadful acne scars who gets laser resurfacing and actually goes out without makeup or the mother of four who gets a tummy tuck and wears a bikini to the beach. Those actions speak volumes about how cosmetic procedures positively affected their self-esteem!
In the 21st century, aging no longer means turning into one of those wrinkled old apple dolls sitting in a rocker. We have a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips about diet, exercise and healthy living. We are programmed to enjoy life after decades of slaving away at our jobs, to travel and see and do things we’ve always dreamed of. Cosmetic procedures allow our appearances to keep up with our bodies, so that we don’t see a stranger when we look in the mirror, but rather the vital, healthy person we are inside.
