New York Fashion Week may be over, but it left us excited and inspired by this season’s avant garde beauty predictions. Since some of the runway’s hottest makeup, hair, and nail styles may be too extreme for our everyday lives, we reinvented some of the projected #NYFW trends with a fresh twist that you can easily recreate at home. Here are our favorite trends and tips for Fall 2014!
No Makeup-Makeup
The au naturale makeup trend made headway at fashion week, emphasizing sheer finishes for an understated look, but the transition from sun-parched summer to fall’s cooler temps may have left you with rough, dry skin. That’s why the best no makeup-makeup looks start with good skin care.
Keep your face looking healthy and refreshed throughout the year by applying a gentle scrub twice a week. Rinse with warm water to open up your pores and follow-up with a hydrating mask. Then exchange your lighter, summer moisturizer for one that’s creamier and more hydrating.
Use a tinted moisturizer, BB cream or a color-correcting moisturizer to let your skin shine through, and keep your cheeks naturally flush with luminous, rosy tints. For lips, choose a glossy shade one notch up from your natural color, and subtly accentuate your eyes with a nude palette featuring various tones of beige, taupe, cream, or subdued brown.
Most importantly, keep up with your SPF routine. Summer may be over, but your skin is susceptible to sun-damage all year long. Look for a sunscreen with broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection, preferably with a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide base, and remember that for a sunscreen to be truly effective, you need to reapply it every few hours especially if you are outdoors.
Muted Smoky Eye
Smoky eyes always make an appearance on the runway, but the latest craze swaps out the standard heavy, black eyeshadow for a softer grey/taupe combo, giving you all the sultriness without the harsh contrast. Bonus: This more subdued smoky eye look transitions brilliantly from day to night.
Braids, Braids, and More Braids
We saw everything from the deconstructed braid to the three-plait pony hit the runways of Donna Karan, Marissa Webb, and the like, and if you want even more inspiration, follow @BraidBar on Instagram for the latest braid trends. Whether you’re going for boho casual or urban chic, though, you want your hair to look shiny and gorgeous, so give your hair the same consideration you give to your skin – especially at the close of summer when your strands are still recovering from all that time spent in the sun, sea, and pool.
Look beyond traditional shampoos and conditioners, and instead search for gentle sulfate-free cleansers, serums, and masks that treat your scalp while protecting your strands. Anti-aging ingredients, such as amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and peptides, can help ensure healthier hair now and in the future by fighting free radicals, decreasing inflammation, and moisturizing skin, all of which stimulate hair growth.
Fashion Forward Nails
Black nail polish has been around the block, but we spotted an edgy, new take on the manicured models of Carmen Marc Valvo’s runway show. The trick? Use a matte black polish instead of a traditional glossy finish for a more sophisticated vibe. If black isn’t your thing, you can still clone this chic runway trend by mattifying any of your favorite colors with Essie’s Matte About You Top Coat.
Flash Tats
Temporary tattoos made their debut at fashion week, and we especially love the versatility of Flash Tattoos’ fashionable faux ink. These jewelry-inspired tattoos are the latest way to accessorize, and their golden, metallic finish is perfect for accentuating fall’s style-savvy colors.
