If you are a makeup enthusiast, you have definitely come across options that also boast skincare benefits. And with many of these formulas costing slightly more than their non-skincare counterparts, one has to wonder: is it worth it? Today we are going to talk all about makeup with skincare benefits. When it is worth it, when it isn’t, and how to choose one that suits your needs!
Is It Worth It? The short answer to this question is: it can be. I know, I know, not the most exciting answer. There are many formulas out there that boast some pretty remarkable benefits, and there are others that make some pretty bold promises without actually delivering them. So how do you know what works and what doesn’t work? The first step will always be research (reviews, descriptions, and even study data if the company has done any, are always help), followed by trying the product for yourself. I am sure you’ve heard it about skincare, and the same goes for makeup: what works for one person may not work for another!
How do I decide on a product? The truth is, research is always going to be your best friend. The age-old wisdom says to look towards skincare brands that also happen to make makeup. However, there are some makeup brands that have totally rocked the “skin care with benefits” category, offering products that not only work to deliver a beautiful finish, but also work to deliver antioxidants, vitamins and other awesome ingredients to your skin! Which ever route you decide to go, make sure you are peeking into the product’s background to make sure it is worth your investment!
What benefits should I look out for? When looking for products, you need to consider the benefits. One thing that beauty enthusiasts should always include on their list is SPF protection! While SPF protection is not a new phenomenon in makeup, brands are starting to amp up the sun protection, delivering SPF30+ in certain formulations, and physical sunscreen options (as opposed to chemical ones). Also, formulas that deliver in the vitamins and antioxidant category are a fantastic route to go. These will typically boast protection from environmental factors, while delivering an element of moisture to your skin. If you have more specific skincare needs (such as hyperpigmentation, acne, etc.) look for formulas that were created specifically for those concerns.
Can it replace my skincare? In most cases, the answer to this question is going to be a strong NO. Makeup formulations that boast additional benefits are almost always better for use in sync with your skincare products, and not as a replacement. If you happen across a formula that contains high levels of active ingredients, consult your esthetician or dermatologist regarding whether or not it is enough to replace your AM serum/moisturizer/treatment.
What types of products can I look for? Here is the most exciting part: nowadays you can find almost any makeup product for your specific needs or concerns with a little due diligence! From concealers that actually help to fight blemishes or dark circles around the eyes, foundations that hydrate while providing SPF and environmental protection, to pigment-packed lipsticks that also have anti-aging ingredients to improve lip health, and much more. You can even find brands that are formulated to be safe for use on post-procedure or ultra-sensitive skin types, so fret not, beauty lovers!
