I spotted the Andalou Naturals Oil Control Beauty Balm Un-tinted with SPF30 while browsing at Whole Foods the other day. Can I not shop for groceries without swinging by the beauty aisle? 😉 Anyways, the reason I picked this product up is not because I need any oil-control from my daily SPF formula but simply because this one offers chemical-free UVA/UVB protection with only mineral sunscreen active zinc oxide and is also verified gluten-free and non-GMO. And it doesn’t hurt that the formula is free of any parabens as well!

The consistency of this product is a little on the thick side but it doesn’t have a heavy or tacky feel going on the skin nor does it seem to clog pores. The formula doesn’t soak in quickly though and needs quite a bit of blending. Still, it leaves a slight white cast initially after application (because of the high concentration of zinc oxide) but thankfully that fades away after a few minutes and becomes almost unnoticeable. I really like that in addition to containing a very good range of anti-aging ingredients, the formula is also nicely moisturizing to act as a daily SPF moisturizer on my dry skin and because there are no artificial fragrances, dyes or harsh irritants in the formula, it is suitable for use around the sensitive eye area to provide the crucial broad-spectrum sun protection.
While it doesn’t make skin look or feel greasy/shiny, I didn’t find the formula to be mattifying. In my opinion, it has more of a semi-matte finish that should work for most skin types except those with oily to very oily skin. As for the oil-control part, I can’t say much about that as my skin has always been on the dry side.
Bottom Line
Andalou Naturals Oil Control Beauty Balm Un-tinted with SPF30 is a good zinc-oxide based moisturizer with SPF but I won’t be purchasing again as the formula is not very cosmetically elegant for use without a foundation on top. If you are looking for a natural and gentle, mineral SPF that not only protects and moisturizes but also treats your skin to a great mix of skin-repairing and antioxidant ingredients, this product is worth checking out (especially for senstive skin types). It’s also priced very well at $19.99 for a 2oz tube! Pick it up at Whole Foods stores or andalou.com
