The new Maybelline Eye Studio Master Drama Cream Pencil claims to be the new generation of eyeliner with its rich color pay-off, creamy application and 24 hours of smudge-proof and water-proof wear. It is also said to be safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearing gals.
Since I already have a few jet black and brown shades in my collection, I was drawn to the shade Coal Commander which is a dark charcoal gray. The application is pretty smooth with the soft, creamy pencil that glides on without tugging or pulling. The color pay-off is also really good and only gets better with a layer or two. As you can see from the swatch below, it has a hint of shimmer but that’s hardly noticeable on eyes. Although I can’t say about 24-hours, the long-wearing claim is mostly true as the color stays put on my upper lash line for the entire day without fading or smudging. (it didn’t budge even on a hot day outside) However, it tends to fade off a bit on my lower lashline after about 4 – 5 hours of wear. I could not test the wear time on waterline because I do not wear eyeliners on my waterline unless it’s an all-natural formula or kohl/kajal pencil meant for use on waterline.
The only downside is the pencil’s twist up mechanism. I am a huge fan of retractable eyeliners because of the convenience factor but Maybelline didn’t get it all right with this new liner. It’s a little hard to twist up at first and once it does, it does not move back down (which can be a hassle in case you extended the tip more than required). Also, it would have been nice if it had a built-in sharpener as the tip becomes flat in a couple of uses making it difficult to line precisely. But for just $7, I should probably not be expecting too much I guess.
Overall, Maybelline’s Master Drama Eyeliner is a great budget-friendly option with a highly pigmented, creamy and long-lasting smudgeproof formula. It’s kinda like the drugstore version of MAC Technakohl as it performs nearly as well as the MAC favorite and comes with an affordable price tag!
