It’s really hard to find a daily facial sunscreen you like as much as your daily facial moisturizer, especially when you want a physical sunblock infused with a high enough percentage of zinc oxide (Zinc Oxide is considered as the gold standard in sun protection) to refract harmful UVA and UVB rays away from your skin. So, whenever I find such a sun-protection product that works for me, I hang onto it (like this one).
When I picked up MD Solar Sciences Mineral Lotion SPF 50 from Dermstore, I had really high hopes for the formula…let’s see how it scored!
Here’s the Product Description :

Ingredients :
Titanium Dioxide 3%, Zinc Oxide 15%. Water, Dimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Octyldodecanol, Quaternium-90 Bentonite, Propylene Carbonate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Polysilicone-15, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum Extract, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Glycerin.
There is no doubt about the fact that MD Solar Sciences Mineral Lotion SPF 50 provides excellent sun protection with a gentle, fragrance-free mineral sunscreen formula that also boasts of several antioxidants and minimal preservatives. It has a lightweight, non-greasy texture that feels good going on the skin and leaves a smooth, satin matte finish that I really like. However, it’s not quite moisturizing enough for me to use on its own (my skin is on the dry side), so I need to layer it on top of a light moisturizer. I suppose it would be sufficiently moisturizing for those with combination to oily skin.
The major downside of this sunscreen is that it leaves a slight but noticable white cast on my skin that doesn’t fade completely even after a few hours. So, I don’t find the formula cosmetically elegant enough to be used on the face and don’t feel confident wearing this on my face unless I apply foundation on top. That’s why I have switched to using this product only as a body sunscreen.
