When you think of a nice and relaxing time out for yourself, what comes to mind? How about a manicure?
There is something that’s so relaxing and refreshing about a manicure. It not only makes your nails neat & tidy, but it also helps to wash away your tensions. A little hand massage and having someone else work on you for a change can really do wonders.
However, while a manicure may be one of the quintessential activities for relaxing, many women do fear getting them. Why? – Well, because there are often horror stories linked to getting a manicure. We’ve all heard stories about the use of unclean tools or having your fingers cut by an inexperienced manicurist. Or, it can be something as simple as feeling pressured by the manicurist for choosing a nail color. It should be said, however, that like all things in life, there is always a good side and a bad side. Just because you may have heard some of these manicure-related horror stories doesn’t mean that you should avoid the delightful experience of getting a manicure altogether.
Here is some helpful advice for avoiding those manicure nightmares, so that you can reap the benefits of this relaxing, and rejuvenating service.
Research your salon
Instead of just stepping into any old salon that you pass, do some research, as this helps dig up any negative comments made about the salon. If people have had bad experiences, they will very likely post their comments on the salon’s website, social media page, or on a business review page, like Yelp.
Bring your own tools
If you are even a little bit unsure about the cleanliness of the tools at the salon, bring in your own! By doing so, you avoid the risk of germs and possible infection, and your tools have only been used on one person–you.
Supply your own color
With so many different nail color options, it can be more than a little bit overwhelming to choose just one in a matter of a few seconds. Avoid this stress and get the color that you want by bringing your own color in with you.
Speak up
While the color you chose may look great in the bottle, once it’s actually on, it might not be what you pictured. If you don’t like your color, say something. No, you aren’t being high maintenance; you just want to get great looking nails. Oh, and you should also tell your manicurist if you want to go shorter, if you don’t like the shape she gave you, or if you’d like a different design on your nails.
Saying yes or no to extra services
It seems to never fail–you go in for a basic manicure and the manicurist tries to sell you on getting a French, an extra moisturizing treatment, tips, or a massage. If you don’t want those extra services, say so. Don’t ever feel obligated to get them or feel like you are being rude when you say no. You aren’t committed to anything and you have the right to get what you want.
Getting a manicure should be a delightful experience. With this insight, you can avoid experiencing any nightmares and instead, enjoy a relaxing and peaceful moment of pampering.

Great tips! Whenever I used to get manicures with my mom the ladies would always pressure her into picking a different color because she always went with a pale pink. She felt so uncomfortable she ended up not going anymore because she wanted to avoid arguing with the manicurist about the color! Yelp is a great way to find a salon!

It has been decades since I had a salon manicure. I am so accustomed to doing my own, I really enjoy the me time. 🙂
