The holidays have always been an excuse to get all decked out — whether it’s wearing your favorite sparkly dress or sporting a shimmery midnight-blue eyeshadow (that goes neglected most days of the year!)
There’s no denying though that when it comes to holiday makeup, nothing gets the festive party spirit going like a bright crimson lip color! Red lipstick is equally sexy and edgy—yet somehow also refined.
The right shade of red lipstick can turn a boring look into a bold, eye-catching statement. Not to mention, red is just the perfect color to break through the dreariness of the cold and grey winter days!
I have to tell you though…not so long ago, I used to be really intimidated by red lipsticks! I don’t know what made me lose my inhibition and fall in love with it, but now red lipstick is one of my makeup must-haves!
Today I am showcasing some of my current favorite matte red lipsticks that I always reach for…
1. Maybelline Made for All Lipstick in Ruby For Me ($4.99)
This is a bold, look-at-me red that pops! The pigmentation is through the roof…just one swipe gives me full-on, ravishing red! This ruby hue is really a statement-making shade. Just the perfect pick for a night out! Although not hydrating, this satin matte finish lipstick wears comfortably without leaving my lips feeling dry or flaky. Swatches here
2. Covergirl Exhibitionist Ultra Matte Lipstick in 680 The Real Thing ($7.94)
This is a beautiful berry red with a hint of pink undertones. The finish is matte but not ‘ultra-matte’ and I really like that! Two layers and I’m good to go, but it can be easily blended for a soft stained look. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen my festive look wearing this red lipstick. Swatches here
3. Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick in 999 ($37)
Dior’s Rouge 999 is one of the most iconic shades of red lipstick ever! It’s a classic, true red with neutral undertones (not too warm and not too cool) so it’s said to be universally flattering and looks good on every skin tone. Hard not to agree!!
I have a mini size of this lipstick which came in one of the holiday sets from Sephora. It’s Incredibly pigmented with a satin matte finish and also long-wearing. All it takes is a single swipe or two and my lips are fully coated. It’s the perfect red that makes a statement, without being too dramatic!
Fun fact: Dior 999 lipstick was worn by models for Dior’s first-ever runway show back in 1947! (Then it was known as 9, and later as 99.) More than 70 years later, this iconic red lipstick is still a best-seller. Celebrity fans include Jennifer Lawrence and many more!
4. The Organic Skin Co. Lipstick in Ruby Red ($16.80)
Packed with pigment, this is a bright cherry red with slightly warm undertones. It’s a vibrant red that stands out without being too loud! I love the creamy, satin formula with a moisturizing matte finish. Despite being an all-natural lipstick, it’s fairly long-lasting and stays put. Also, it’s vegan and cruelty-free. Swatches here
5. Almay Lip Vibes Lipstick in Love Yourself ($7.99)
This is a rich, brick red with cream finish. It feels velvety smooth on the lips and glides on effortlessly without any dryness or drag. The formula is not super long-wearing but creamy and comfortable with a great color payoff. Not to mention, I love the cute and colorful packaging it comes in! Swatches here
6. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Plush Matte Lipstick in Spanked ($18)
Although described as a dusty rose, I see this one as more of a spiced terracotta red. It was love at first swipe for me! The formula is super smooth and creamy with a satin matte finish that isn’t drying at all. And it excels in the pigmentation department too!
I think this shade is the perfect low-maintenance ‘starter red’ for those who do not want a fiery red but still looking for a pretty pop of color!
