Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer is a serum/primer hybrid that is designed to banish unwanted shine while keeping your skin hydrated. Infused with collagen and antioxidants, it promises to plump the appearance of your complexion while prepping skin for flawless makeup application.
I have super dry skin, especially in winter so a hydrating primer is a must for me before applying makeup. When I bought this Makeup Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer at Ulta, I never expected to discover a dupe for Fenty Beauty Hydrating Primer (more on that later!)
Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise to find a good dupe for one of my favorite but pricey primers!
Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer has a lightweight silky texture that goes on very smoothly, more like a serum. It does have a slight silicone feel on my skin but not as much as the typical silicone-based primers.
The formula is lightly hydrating without a heavy feel and creates a smooth canvas for the makeup to glide onto. It leaves no shine or dewiness and sets to a velvety matte finish. This primer isn’t as blurring as some other pore-diffusing primers, but it is a beautiful makeup base and does a good job of smoothing my skin’s texture.
I tend to use 1-2 pumps of the primer after my moisturizer and then blend foundation on top. It helps my makeup apply more easily without clinging to any dry patches and also helps it last longer.
Although the Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer seems to be geared more towards normal to dry skin, I think it will probably work well even for those with combination to oily skin especially in the cold winter months.
Fenty Beauty Hydrating Primer Dupe
Now let’s talk about how the Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer ($15) compares to Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer ($32)
I have the Fenty Beauty Hydrating primer (my review here) and it is indeed very similar to this Hydra Matte Primer.
First up, both of them have a lightly hydrating yet matte finish formula that feels very lightweight. Both the primers leave my skin looking/feeling very smooth and nicely prepped for makeup but none of them have a pore-blurring finish.
Texture wise, these primers are not exactly identical in the way that they feel right away but once applied on the face, they create the same velvety matte base.
If you compare the ingredients, both the primers contain silicones and glycerin. However, the Fenty Beauty primer is formulated with grape seed oil and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate skin whereas Revolution Hydra Matte primer contains antioxidants and collagen.
Another difference between the two is fragrance. The Fenty Beauty primer has a soft scent (that I love!) but the Revolution primer is fragrance-free which is actually better from a skincare point of view!
I applied each one to one side of my face for a few days to compare them and they really are nearly identical. I cannot tell a difference! Both of them provide smoothing & hydrating benefits and prolong my makeup wear. Performance is really what matters at the end of the day!
I’m not sure I can justify repurchasing Fenty Hydrating Primer when there’s a great dupe that’s $17 cheaper even though I adore Fenty Beauty!
Bottom Line
Revolution PRO Hydra Matte Primer gets a two thumbs up from me! It’s a great primer if you want to give an extra boost of hydration to your skin (without any dewiness or glow) before applying any foundation. And I absolutely love it as a Fenty Hydrating Primer dupe!
If you are also a fan of the Fenty Beauty Hydrating Primer ($32), I highly recommend trying out this affordable dupe at less than half the price! I really do think you’ll be impressed. Available only at Ulta Beauty for $15.
I’d love to know if you’ve tried either of these primers? Do like finding makeup dupes?
