You like your hair color looking lush and freshly done, 24/7. But now that most of us are confined to our homes and salons are closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, getting your hair color done at the salon is not an option. Even if those grown-out roots or grays have started showing through!
So what to do? While coloring your hair at home using a drugstore hair dye is an option, picking the right shade can be overwhelming especially if you haven’t ever used an at-home hair color kit before.
That’s where the root touch-up products come in! They let you get rid of gray roots without changing your hair color for the long term. No commitment or damage!
When it comes to gray hair, I have plenty of experience! I have been battling with grays since I was in my early twenties so I’ve tried a lot of gray root concealers over the years. Ahead you’ll find some of the best root touch-up products with temporary hair color that can be a great quick-fix to cover up the annoying gray roots.
Most of these are formulated without ammonia or peroxide and are not harsh on hair, which makes them a safer alternative to at-home hair colors. And you don’t have to worry about chemical/bleach damage or over-processed strands. Even better, they come with an affordable price tag (under $25) and conveniently available online at Amazon, Target or Ulta Beauty!
So, if you can’t stand the sight of those pesky gray roots, reach for one of these best root touch-up products to cover up grays and regrowth until you can go back to your stylist at the salon (which might take a while, given the current situation) No more gray days!
1. Clairol Root Touch-Up Concealing Powder ($9.96)
This is the perfect spot treatment to precisely conceal those pesky, scattered grays in just a few seconds! The convenient compact comes with a precision root brush that can cover single strands, refresh root line, touch up temples and even define your brows. Just dip the brush into the powder and sweep it across your roots.
Available in 6 shades that blend in naturally, the water-resistant formula lasts until next shampoo. Perfect to keep in your purse or makeup bag for take-anywhere, precise gray coverage. You get approx 40–60 applications per compact. Also available at Target and Ulta Beauty
2. Revlon Root Erase Permanent Root Touch-Up Kit ($9.97)
Permanent root touch-up in just 5 minutes? Yes, please! This ready-to-use kit makes disguising gray roots much easier, faster and less messy than ever. It’s such a savior for those of us going gray with a lightning speed!
The ready-to-use can does the work for you, dispensing both creams at once—just pump, mix in the cap that doubles as a bowl and apply color to the visible roots or grays — wherever you want coverage.
The best part? You don’t need to use the entire kit in one session! Both parts of the remaining formula (colorant and developer) stay stable in the dual-sided can, so each kit can be used up to 3 times (it comes with 3 pairs of gloves and an easy-applicator brush)
You just need to leave the color on for 5 minutes, but stubborn grays like mine need an extra 5. This root touch-up kit is available in 13 shades formulated to match all the leading at home hair-color shades, and even salon colors.
3. L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Cover Up ($7.18)
Another favorite of mine is this temporary gray concealer from L’Oreal that sprays aways grays in seconds! It dries quickly to a natural finish and leaves no smudging or sticky residue when dry. It lasts until your next shampoo, plus it’s ammonia-free and peroxide-free and comes in a wide array of 8 shades from blonde to black and even red.
I use the shade Medium Brown and it blends easily without making my hair look dull or greasy. It does stain my comb when I blend in the color but once dry (after about a minute), it really lasts and doesn’t rub off on my clothes or hands, nor does it smear onto my pillow at night. Also available at Target and Ulta Beauty.
If you have just started to see a few grays pop up (lucky you!), try the L’Oreal Magic Root Precision Pen to hide them in a snap!
4. Clairol Root Touch-Up Color Refreshing Spray Twin Pack ($9.47)
This is a great value pack with two temporary root touch-up color sprays under $10! Super easy to use, the water-resistant formula gives you instant natural-looking gray coverage that lasts until your next shampoo. Just shake the can and spray on…gray hair gone! Also available at Ulta Beauty
5. Style Edit Root Touch-Up Binding Powder ($34)
This root touch-up powder has been another trusty staple in my get-rid-of-grays arsenal. I usually reach for it when I have to cover larger areas of gray roots and regrowth along my part line (i.e. when my actual color session is long overdue!) The compact comes with a sponge applicator and mirror inside. It glides over those pesky grays easily and there’s no powdery fall out around my face.
It dries pretty quickly, doesn’t feel greasy or sticky and also washes out easily with shampoo. And the color doesn’t drip down my face even during a sweaty Zumba workout (at-home these days!) It comes in a wide variety of 10 shades to match the blackest black to the lightest blonde hair color. The only little drawback is that it rubs off a little on my hands if I happen to touch my hair, even a few hours after applying.
This one is a bit pricey but worth it if you have a lot of gray hair like me or fast-growing roots that need frequent touch-ups. With this one, you won’t have to go rushing off to the salon quite so often!
6. Bumble and bumble Bb. Color Stick ($26)
This is a twist-up crayon that glides on easily for instant, mess-free root touch-ups. The velvety, dry fiber color stick delivers water-resistant color that won’t budge. It’s especially perfect to hide grays around the hairline and also filling in sparse eyebrows. The portable pencil provides precise gray coverage, with no drying time needed!
7. TRESemmé Root Touch-Up Temporary Hair Color Spray ($7.99)
This temporary root touch-up spray is another great drugstore fix that instantly conceals gray roots with a quick spritz! The non-sticky formula stays in place (no smudging!) until your next wash. Free of ammonia, peroxide and synthetic dyes, it dries in seconds for residue-free root coverage and won’t stain your scalp. Plus it fits right into your bag or purse and provides up to 30-40 applications in one bottle.
8. Gray Away Root Touch-Up Quick Stick ($8.99)
This stick is another super-affordable drugstore option to hide those sneaky silver strands! It’s perfect for targeted gray root coverage at the hairline and smaller areas like your temples and even eyebrows. The wax-free formula goes on smooth, doesn’t flake and dries down quickly to a powdery finish. The dual-ended stick has an angled tip for precise application and a sponge tip on the other end to blend in the color easily. Also available at Amazon, Walmart and CVS
9. Cover Your Gray Fill-In Powder ($8.49)
This tinted powder not only helps you get rid of those unwanted gray roots instantly but also conceals any thinning or sparse areas. Just apply the formula where you need it! It’s rain proof, sweat proof and easily washes out with shampoo. Includes compact with mirror and brush applicator and comes in 4 shades that blend seamlessly. Also available at Ulta Beauty
10. Toppik Hair Building Fibers ($25)
Besides concealing gray roots, this two-in-one powder does double duty by also filling in thinning areas or balding spots and build texture to give you the look of thicker, fuller hair.
Made of natural, colored Keratin protein that is statically charged, these tiny hair-like microfibers intertwine with your existing hair strands and blend undetectably for a completely natural look. Simply sprinkle on the area you’d like to conceal—or enhance—and go! It works in seconds and resists wind, rain, and perspiration but removes easily with shampoo. Available in 9 shades, these fibers can be used to match any hair color. Also available at Dermstore and Ulta Beauty.
So, these are the best root touch-up products for gray hair that will help you keep up your color at home, until you can get to the salon!
